It can sometimes happen that the Barcode Scan App does not recognise the barcode correctly. This can have a number of causes.

Item has no barcode

It may be that the item you are trying to scan does not yet have a barcode in Exact Online or that it is not yet known in the Barcode Scan App. From the settings you can quickly add barcodes to Exact Online. Look for the “Fill in barcode” button under the Barcode tab in the settings. There you also have the option to check whether your administration has duplicate barcodes.

Webcam scanner

For the app to work properly with the webcam camera on your phone, the app needs permission to use the camera. If the app does not have permission, you will not see an image when you open the barcode scanner pop-up:

To fix this, open the browser used to open the app. This is usually Google Chrome. In the browser, go to /app/ and log in with your Exact Online account. It may be that when you have installed the app as a Progressive Web App, it opens automatically. In that case, go back to Google Chrome.

Then open the settings of Google Chrome:

Settings

Then click on Site Settings:

Site settings

And choose Camera:

Camera settings

Make sure that “Ask before sites can use your camera” is enabled:

Grant camera access

Then go back to the Barcode Scan App and open the Barcode Popup. You should now be asked whether the app may use your camera. Press Allow:

Allow camera

You should now see the camera feed and you can start scanning barcodes.

Webcam alternative scanner

You can scan barcodes with the webcam on your phone. However, this does not work on all phones. Try the alternative scanner. If this also does not work, consider purchasing an industrial barcode scanner. These work very well with the app. Click here for more information about the different scanning options.

Barcode is not recognised with a dedicated barcode scanner

When you try to scan the barcode with a dedicated barcode scanner, it may not yet be properly configured to work with the app. When scanning a barcode with a barcode scanner, make sure that the barcode field is selected:

Barcode field

The barcode must be entered in the barcode field as keyboard input (keyboard wedge). For the barcode to be recognised immediately, it is important that the barcode scanner finishes with an enter key. Consult the manual of your scanner on how to set it up to finish with an enter key. For some scanners this is called suffix or an end character must be entered. If a code is requested, this is usually the number 13.

In addition, it is important that your barcode scanner can correctly recognise the barcode type. Use an app such as ZXing to determine the barcode type (Code128, EAN, etc.). Check in the settings of your scanner whether this barcode type is accepted. It may be that it is disabled.

It is also important that the barcode is clearly readable. This means that there must be a high contrast between the black bars and the background. Preferably the background should be light in colour (white). The surface should also not be reflective.

With this tool you can test whether the barcodes are correctly recognised or whether strange characters are being sent.
